Marketing Tips From The Pros

Marketing tips from the pros - where successful writers can share their marketing and promotional tips with you!

The greatest reward of being a freelance writer is to earn a good income while working from the comfort of your home. But it's not just about the writing.

In order to be successful you must learn how to get your work in front of the people who can benefit from it and although most writers I've talk with aren't comfortable with it, marketing is the only way to do that.

As writers, we just want to write. I feel the same way, but unless you have someone who wants to do your marketing for you, it's not an option, not unless your writing just for yourself and don't expect to make a living from it.

Marketing does not have to be hard or ugly. It's just about letting others know your here and have something to offer. So with that in mind...

Here are a few of my direct marketing tips to get you thinking about what works for you.

  • Put a marketing plan in place, a few things you will do every month, and follow through with that plan, no matter how busy you get. You should decide this when you're writing a business plan.
  • Read books in your field.
  • Self publish your own ebooks.
  • Network. Yes, I know. We write because we like to be left alone. But in order to keep your business successful, you need to mix and mingle. It's very important to stay visible in your writers market.
  • Create a website for your business. This is a must do!
  • Join online forums, discussion groups, social networking platforms where you can interact with other writers and writing markets. If you have a work overload, you may give it away to another writer whom you know and vice versa. Remember, co-operation makes more sense in the world of freelance writing jobs.

For writing careers, like in any type of business, you must learn to market yourself and your work, which most writers don't enjoy doing.

So, in order to help, I am asking YOU to share your marketing tips!
