How to Become a Writer:
Your New Life Starts Here!

How to become a writer...the question asked by anyone who dreams of writing for their career.

Have you always wanted to write, but had a few doubts? But, now you're ready to start your new career and just want to know how to start your writing career!

Freelance writing opportunities and freelance writer jobs are not that tough to find, but when looking at all the different writing careers available, it can be quite confusing, especially if your writing goals consist of having a speciality where you can get paid to write, and I mean making real money writing.

When choosing the writing careers that pay well, you want to be sure you can make a good living in your chosen field.

Before you make any major decisions, you may want to consider a few things you should know first about how to become a writer.

  • Identify your passion. It's critical you write about things which inspire you. Otherwise you can easily become distracted and lose motivation. If you have a hobby, profession, or subject that captivates your interest repeatedly, incorporate it into your writing.

  • Get the right training.
  • Just like any new career you would start, you need to be sure to get the right training. You wouldn't be a lawyer without attending law school or a doctor without going to medical school, and to become a writer you need to get the best training possible as well.

  • Consider all of the options. Not everyone can create a blockbuster novel. Anyone with passion might be able to earn a living from writing. Copywriting is probably the highest paid skill on the Internet. Six Figure Copywriting is a home study course that will get you on your way to making a great income writing from home. I took it several years ago and started my own copywriting business. It is still one of my best resources.Article writing is in great demand for providing content for websites. Creative writers are in demand to bid for projects every day. So the first step in how to become a writer is to research all of the options.

  • Continue to learn your craft. Learning how to become a writer requires that you be a voracious learner. Read books, take classes, and pay attention to what you enjoy. When you begin your writing career you'll likely cover assorted and diverse projects. To generate a continuous stream of ideas, get into the habit of reading various books and newspapers. When you're ready to specialize, take classes in that specialty, attend lectures by professionals, and join online communities and groups who share related interests. The advantage is you'll acquire more expertise in a particular area. The more expertise you obtain the more access you have to a receptive audience.

  • Network and prospect. In order to earn money, you're going to need customers/clients. These can be magazine or newspaper editors, business owners, publishers, or people who purchase books. Networking helps you establish valuable contacts. And since it's customary for writers to work solo, so networking can also keep you in touch with the business world.

  • Investigate writing options. When you choose to learn how to become a writer you have numerous writing choices. For example, you can choose to specialize in medical writing jobs, legal writing, fiction writing, become a columnist, sports writer, copywriter or find your niche in the technical writing field. Or you can write for magazines or newspapers or look into editing jobs.

  • Create a Portfolio. A writing portfolio is a sample collection of your written work. Its purpose is to showcases your writing ability. Having a portfolio demonstrates your professionalism and proves your initiative. It will also boost your confidence when figuring out how to become a writer. Samples can be contained in a binder, on a CD, or website. An editor or client prospect might ask to see a few writing samples just to get a sense of your writing style. When you're first starting out on your journey learning how to become a writer, it's understandable that you won't have any published material. Do not let this dissuade you one bit. And never apologize for a modest portfolio. However you can build a professional-looking portfolio easily by including samples of material you've written for work. These could be sales letters, PowerPoint presentations, project reports, or corporate communication pieces. Include any essays or articles that are unpublished. You can also create mock newsletters and brochures. Use the advertisements you get in the mail as a guide.

Client Testimonials

"A cardinal rule of writing to follow is, never write your own back cover copy. Why? You’re too close to the work and can’t be objective. Enter Maria Pease.

I contracted her services to write the back cover copy for my upcoming novel, Crossing Lives. The only caveat was, my manuscript was nowhere near finished.  Despite this obstacle, Maria took on the project.

Most copywriters won’t touch this type of project unless you can furnish them with a copy of the entire work to be summarized.

In a span of three weeks, with just a few chapters and handful of character sketches to go by, she was able to craft a masterful blurb that captured the essence of the story I’m trying to tell.

Maria communicated with me on consistent basis and took a personal interest in my project. This was a pleasant surprise. Most “work for hire” is cold, aloof, and distant.

I highly recommend Maria Pease for all your copy writing needs."

Matt Leatherwood, Jr. Author, Train To Baghdad

“Thank you very much for the job well done! I hope we will have an opportunity to work together again in the future."

Timo Kestrel - Website Owner UK

"I needed a website for my new practice and I had no time or skills to do it myself. Thank goodness I met Maria through a business associate. She had my site up and running in no time. She even gave me some suggestions on how to make some affiliate income along with the service I provide.

If you need a writer who listens to what you want and gives great ideas on how to improve it, call Maria. You won't be disappointed."

Sandee West - Marriage & Family Therapist

"Maria has developed a business brochure and numerous newsletters and has been able to interpret the information I give her into professional writing pieces that communicate to my clients the value of my product.

Maria’s professional knowledge has played a large part in portraying my company in a professional light.

Maria Pease has been a pleasure to work with and I feel she would be an asset to any company in need of a commercial writer."

Lisa Beach - The Box Wrap Company

"I needed to update most of our marketing and sales materials including a brochure, a couple of sales letters, tips sheets and some in-house communications. Maria took care of it all and did a beautiful job on all of it. If you are looking for a capable, and enjoyable copywriter to work with, you can stop looking, Maria is your girl."

Wayne Francis - Window and door installation services

"I hired Maria Pease to help me promote my business and have been extremely pleased with her performance. She has developed all of my marketing materials to date including brochures, postcards, and promotional flyers.

Maria is a pleasure to work with, always energetic and enthusiastic about the task at hand. She continues to come up with fresh, new, innovative ideas to help move my business forward. She is dedicated to providing a superior product and has continued to exceed all of my expectations. It has been refreshing to me, as a small business owner, to be able to rely on an outside consultant to be professional, reliable, and self motivated."

Andrea Tomes - New Image Fitness

"My advice is to hire Maria Pease to write for you. She is full of great ideas and will execute them beautifully. I have worked with her many times on several different types of projects from articles to websites and more and she never disappoints. She is truly a delight to work with. If you need a writer, look no further than Maria."
