What's Holding You Back?

The reason I ask is that I know the challenges, the dilemmas and the fear that may happen before, during, and even after you have written the words “The End”

Two weeks ago I finished writing my second Sam Parker mystery. It was truly a moment that I wasn’t sure would ever come. You see, after my first book, Malicious Intent A Sam Parker Mystery

was published and I received such good feedback, I began preparing to write my second book. I was excited and had so many ideas I was practically bursting.

With all my ideas, characters, locations and a shell of a plot, I began writing. It was crazy how it all seemed to just flow, day after day. I felt like I was in the zone. If you have ever experienced that feeling, in anything, you’ll know how amazing it felt. I was unstoppable…at least I thought I was.

Unexpectedly my mom passed away. I was half way through my book.

I am lucky, I had a really great relationship with my mom and I am grateful for that. We laughed a lot, about so many things. I can still hear her laugh sometimes. And she was a huge support for me and my writing.

But it also meant that losing her devastated me. It wasn’t just sad for me, it completely blew me away. I couldn’t even function for a long time. I knew I needed to get back to my book, but after more than a year…yes, fourteen months, I knew she would want me to finish it.

I took out my manuscript and dusted it off. I re-read it, and took out all my notes. I had to find my way back, but I was having a tough time. I was unmotivated, and uninspired. But I pressed on, trying desperately to get some momentum.

Then the call came. My dad, who also had not been ill, had passed unexpectedly.

You have to know how much I loved my parents to understand what this did to me. Fifteen months after losing my mom, my dad went to be with her and I was, once again, tossed into this grief that I couldn’t seem to escape, no matter what I did.

That was four years ago. I just finished that book.

The point I want to make to you, aspiring writer, is that you will, most likely have life changing events that can throw you off, tackle you, beat you up and try to take you out, but you don’t have to surrender.

I know that my parents are proud of the fact that I held on, no matter how long it took, and completed this book.

If there is something, some circumstance, some event, or even fear stopping you from doing something you want to do, I understand. It isn’t easy to find your way back and I’m living proof of that. But you can do it. I’d love to hear your stories, so if you want to share them, please

send me an e-mail

I will keep you posted on the publishing date for my new book! But you can still read more about Malicious Intent if you'd like to.
