10 Powerful Marketing Tips

Try these 10 powerful marketing tips to get your business off the ground and successful fast!

If you have ever thought about starting a copywriting business, now is the time.

With the job market not having a lot of stability, and those who have jobs, unsure of their fate, it is almost becoming a necessity to have some control over your work life.

But there are a few things you should know about running your own business too.

If you ask any copywriter what scares them the most about starting a copywriting business, most of them will tell you it’s S & M ...Sales & Marketing.

Why is this? Most writers really like working alone. It’s what the writing life is all about. They feel like sales and marketing is a forceful and pushy activity, and it just doesn’t feel right.

But does S & M have to be so intimidating? Thinking about sales makes most of us invoke imagery of the slick car salesman forcing us to buy some piece of garbage we don’t even want. And then they rip us off in the process. Is that what you would do? No, of course not.

The reality of sales & marketing is that it is all about letting prospective clients know you exist, what you can do for them, and be sure they know that you’d like to work with them.

But where do you start your marketing efforts? Just choose one or two of these tips and then add another one each month. Start with something you will do fairly easily like these simple direct marketing tips.

You will want to do them regularly too, in ways that get your message to them clearly. You can do this through letters, calls, postcards, email and ads. It’s all about getting your name in front of them often enough so when they hear it, they remember it.

You want to become familiar to them so they are comfortable with you. Just as we all feel like we know Oprah, hearing and seeing your name will make them feel as though they know you.

No one wants to deal with anyone that is forceful or nasty. Would you? I would bet that one of the reasons you want to become a freelance copywriter is so you don’t have to deal with people like that. I know that was a big part of it for me!

Now that you understand what marketing is all about, let’s discuss some of the tips. Writing help is on the way!

  • One task a day - All you have to do is take action and do one tip a day to get a new client. It might be sending out a sales letter, making one phone call, getting a referral or putting an ad in a local paper or trade journal. The key is to do it everyday, not just once.

  • Get out of your comfort zone and network - You can join writing and marketing groups, go to mixers, and become visible in your business community.

  • Give a way's - A great way to keep your name in front of clients and potential clients is to give them things like calendars, coffee mugs, golf balls, address books, pens and notepads. It doesn’t hurt that people love getting things for free, so they will remember you and may just call you for their next project.

  • Contact information -  Always have your name, business name, phone number, address, email address and website URL on every piece of marketing material you have and add it as a signature on your outgoing emails. Nothing is more frustrating than wanting to hire a copywriter and not being able to get in touch with them.

  • Stay calm - No matter what situation you are in with your workload; don’t let anyone know if you’re stressed for work, even if you are. Your clients and prospective clients want to work with busy, successful copywriters. If things are slow, take free online writing courses to improve your writing skills and get writing ideas.

  • Teach a copywriting class - Adult classes and community educational programs are always looking for professionals to teach. The pay may not be all that great but it’s a great chance to keep your name out there and get referrals, but even more importantly, you are viewed as an expert in your field. That is just where you want to be. And copywriting courses are helpful to all business people.

  • Don’t skimp on stationary - Be sure to personalize yourself by writing thank you notes after you have met with a client or prospective client. Not very many people focus on good business etiquette so a handwritten note will make you stand out among your peers.

  • Track your promotional efforts - Keep records of what is working and what isn’t in your marketing efforts. This will help you to focus on the activities that are important in growing your business and writing for money is the goal.

  • Join trade associations and groups - You can offer to give a short talk before a meeting or offer tips sheets to pass out at meetings. Have your contact information on any written materials.

  • Be sure to have a website - This is one of the most important of the 10 powerful marketing tips here. Writers websites allows you to connect with your clients, show off projects you have done by having an online portfolio and communicate what you can offer a potential client. You can also post news, tips, write informative articles and sell your own digital products. If you don’t have one, please get one!
