Resume Writing Help You Can Use

1. How did you get into the business of helping people write resumes?

It happened gradually for me. Since I like to write, my close family members started asking me to help them with their resumes. I helped quite a few people that way. Then I had some experiences where I was on the other end of the desk, hiring people. Some people who would have otherwise been good candidates turned in terrible looking resumes. I felt that if they had just had a little guidance they could have really made their resumes look nice. Then, after the economy crashed I often heard people talking about looking for work. I really wanted to find a way to help.

Some things about writing resumes are so simple. Most people can put together a really nice simple resume with only a few good tools to guide them. That’s what my website is for, and more.

2. Let me ask you, why is it important to have a resume?

Many people think that all there is to getting a job is filling out job applications. So why is a resume important?

For one thing, if you’re applying for the sort of job where most people just fill out an application, then turning in a resume automatically puts you to the top of the job application stack. It makes you appear more professional right from the start.

Secondly, there are many higher-level jobs that require a resume. If you didn’t turn in a resume you would be automatically eliminated from candidacy for that job.

3. Can’t I just find a resume template online and make a quick resume that way?

Although there are a few paid websites that offer passable resume templates, there are also many very bad resume templates out there on the web. You could end up with a sloppy, unorganized resume that doesn’t fit your needs or the needs of the job you’re applying for and that's not helpful resume writing help.

Although it takes a little more work, the best way to make a resume is to start from scratch with a blank piece of paper. That’s not to say that looking at sample resumes isn’t a good idea. Look around until you find a resume sample that appeals to you. Make sure it isn’t too flashy or too colorful. That looks unprofessional. Then pattern your resume after the sample, making changes to the formatting as it suits your needs.

But there is also a way to create a great resume with the live resume builder in just a few short minutes. It's the best builder I've found and really creates a very professional resume so easily.

Take a look at it here.

4. Is it important to make a cover letter?

In this age of technology many, if not most, employers are looking for an online resume submission. That usually means you’ll need to attach it to an email. In some ways, that email is your cover letter. In that way you can’t avoid it. But even if you’re handing in a hard copy of your resume or submitting your resume through an online form it’s good to include a cover letter.

The cover letter expands on what’s in your resume. It allows you to explain any irregularities and it allows you to let the employer know if you already know someone who works at the company. A cover letter partially tells your story and it’s good to have it as a companion to your resume. It also does the work of setting you apart from anyone who didn’t write one. Generally, writing a resume cover letter is a good idea.

5. What does your website do if it doesn’t give out sample templates?

My website teaches people how to write their own resumes from scratch. It gives lots of samples of both resumes and cover letters, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to create your own. It also gives interview tips and tricks from what to wear to an interview to a list of common interview questions and ideas for answers to them.

6. What can I do if I keep turning in resumes and I’m not getting a job?

There are many reasons you might not be getting any jobs. Make sure you check your resume and cover letter. The spelling and grammar must be perfect. Nothing makes an employer throw away a resume faster than common grammar and spelling mistakes. If this is a problem, get some resume writing help and perfect what you can control.

Make sure you’re dressing for success in your interview. Dress professionally, without too much flash. You want to be attractive but not sexy. When you arrive in the interview, look people in the eye and smile. Shake hands firmly but not aggressively. If you need a second to think about the question don’t stammer and say, “Uhhhh…” Just pause a moment and look at the ceiling. Your interviewer will respect that you took a moment to answer.

Sometimes people just have bad luck. Just take it in stride. If you keep putting yourself out there and acting professionally, eventually someone will recognize how valuable you would be as an employee and hire you.

7. Can I make a resume and cover letter if I’m not a very good writer?

Many people aren’t natural writers. That’s okay. Writing a good resume isn’t like writing an essay. You’re just listing thing that you’ve done in the past. The key to writing a great resume is to use words that sound professional. Don’t put on your resume that you use to “plan parties,” put that you were the “event coordinator.” See how much better that sounds? Instead of “answering phones” say that you “managed the front desk.”

If you find a good resume sample you should have no problem listing your employment history and your skills. Get some resume writing help by  always make sure to have someone else look over your resume to make sure it has perfect spelling and grammar.

8. When I write a resume I feel like I’m bragging about myself. Any advice?

Sometimes selling yourself feels unnatural in a culture where it’s rude to brag about yourself. But an employer won’t know anything about you except what you put in your resume and cover letter. They have to make a judgment call based on very little information. So give them the best information you have about yourself!

On the other hand, it’s not your job to make yourself sound like a god. Especially in your interview, tell the best parts of yourself but if you try to make yourself sound unbelievable that is just what your employer will think: that you’re not believable.

9. What are some basic things I should keep in mind when writing my resume?

The first thing to keep in mind is that spelling and grammar should be perfect. No matter the content of your resume, make sure there are no mistakes. There are plenty of good editors that can give you resume writing help to be sure your resume is flawless.

The next thing to keep in mind is that the more experience you have, the better. Employers always like to see that someone has plenty of experience in their field. If you don’t have a lot of experience, that’s ok. Just highlight what you have. Also, many skills you learn in one field can easily cross into another. If you learned customer service skills or organizational skills in one field, that experience counts in other fields too.

10. Do you have any other advice for job seekers?

If you’re having a hard time getting a job, don’t take it personally. There just aren’t enough jobs to go around these days. Don’t get discouraged. If you’ve already brushed up your resume and cover letter then the best thing you can do is work on yourself. Be the kind of person an employer would want to hire. Be responsible. Be hardworking. Be professional. Be punctual.

Good luck!
