Recommendation Letters

Recommendation letters are a written reference designed to offer information about your character and work ethic.

Letters of recommendation are valuable in many areas. Although most people think of academics like admissions into graduate school, a recommendation letter is also helpful in the working world and may help you to land the job of your dreams.

So the question is: What Should be Included in a Letter?

There are three things that should be included:

  • A paragraph or sentence explaining how you know the person you are writing about and the nature of your relationship with them.

  • An honest evaluation of the person's skills and accomplishments. It's best to include specific examples.

  • A statement or summary that explains why you would recommend the person you are writing about.

These letters provide information that may or may not be found in your application, including academic and work achievements, character references, and personal details that set you apart from other applicants. Here a few things to remember when asking for a letter of recommendation.

    • Choose someone who knows you well enough to give you a recommendation.

    • Ask employers, clients, professors, school administration, and anyone else who is familiar with your work ethic.

    • Be sure to tell the letter writer why you need the recommendation letter.

    • Write a note thanking the person for writing the letter for you. It takes time and thought to write a good one.

    • Keep copies of the letter, so you will have it on hand if you need to use it again in the future.
