Marketing for writers... most writers have problems with marketing because it feels like your tooting your own horn, but it is important to remember you are not necessarily marketing yourself, you are marketing the skill of writing.

In many cases, just focusing on this fact can help writers to understanding that they don't need to be Loud-mouthed and aggressive about having been given a skill, but they do need to treat it like a business, if they want it to be a business.

Marketing for writers can be the toughest part of your freelance writing business. Follow these pr and marketing tips for successful self promotion for any type of freelance writing business.

  • Always have your contact information on every piece of marketing material including your website.

  • Learn to write copy that sells.

  • Design a simple website for your writing business

  • Use direct mail to generate new business leads.

  • Create a postcard and mail it to those who could use your services.

  • Create marketing materials describing your services, fees, samples and background information and mail it to those who respond to your ads and mailings.

  • Advertise your services in newspapers and magazines that advertising professionals and business people read.

  • Read books on marketing specifically for writers.

  • write articles - it positions you as an expert.

  • Write a book or e-book with great content.

  • Let clients know you have work. They want to know their writer is "successful."

  • Promote your services with a free newsletter and offer it on your website - called an ezine.

  • Be easy to get along with. You would be surprised how many people just don't get this! No one wants to work with a pain in the #@*! No matter how good you think you are.

  • Be a good listener. Actually listen. Most people are trying to think of what to say, and miss the point. Listening shows respect, and people (your clients) like to feel they are respected, as we all do.

  • Ask for feedback, in writing, and keep copies in your sample book.

  • Join associations and writing groups, offer to help others.

  • Don't stop your marketing, no matter how busy you are!

  • Explore opportunities to market yourself and your business. Promote your work with press releases and media kits.

  • Get out and network. Most writers enjoy the solitude but networking is crucial to a long successful business.


These simple steps, done on a regular basis will get your marketing efforts off to a very good start. And when you continue to do them, your business will take off!
