Have you always wanted to become a writer, but had a few doubts? But, now you're ready to start your new career and just want to know how to become a writer!
Before you make any major decisions, you may want to consider a few things you should know first.
- Identify your passion. It's critical you write about things which inspire you. Otherwise you can easily become distracted and lose motivation. If you have a hobby, profession, or subject that captivates your interest repeatedly, incorporate it into your writing.
- Get the right training.
Just like any new career you would start, you need to be sure to get the right training. You wouldn't be a lawyer without attending law school or a doctor without going to medical school, and to become a writer you need to get the best training possible as well.
- Consider all of the options. Not everyone can create a blockbuster novel. Anyone with passion might be able to earn a living from writing.
Copywriting is probably the highest paid skill on the Internet. Article writing is in great demand for providing content for websites. Creative writers are in demand to bid for projects every day. So the first step in how to become a writer is to research all of the options.
- Continue to learn your craft. Learning how to become a writer requires that you be a voracious learner. Read books, take classes, and pay attention to what you enjoy. When you begin your writing career you'll likely cover assorted and diverse projects. To generate a continuous stream of ideas, get into the habit of reading various books and newspapers.
When you're ready to specialize, take classes in that specialty, attend lectures by professionals, and join online communities and groups who share related interests. The advantage is you'll acquire more expertise in a particular area. The more expertise you obtain the more access you have to a receptive audience.
- Network and prospect. In order to earn money, you're going to need customers/clients. These can be magazine or newspaper editors, business owners, publishers, or people who purchase books. Networking helps you establish valuable contacts. And since it's customary for writers to work solo, so networking can also keep you in touch with the business world.
- Investigate writing options. When you choose to learn how to become a writer you have numerous writing choices. For example, you can choose to specialize in medical writing jobs, legal writing, fiction writing, become a columnist, sports writer, copywriter or find your niche in the technical writing field. Or you can write for magazines or newspapers or look into editing jobs.
Other writers prefer to focus on authoring books and ebooks. Writers also work in the commercial arena, copywriting is where they specialize in developing marketing materials that businesses use to promote their company and products.
- Create a Portfolio. A writing portfolio is a sample collection of your written work. Its purpose is to showcases your writing ability. Having a portfolio demonstrates your professionalism and proves your initiative. It will also boost your confidence when figuring out how to become a writer.
Samples can be contained in a binder, on a CD, or website. An editor or client prospect might ask to see a few writing samples just to get a sense of your writing style.
When you're first starting out it's understandable that you won't have any published material. Do not let this dissuade you one bit. And never apologize for a modest portfolio. However you can build a professional-looking portfolio easily by including samples of material you've written for work. These could be sales letters, PowerPoint presentations, project reports, or corporate communication pieces. Include any essays or articles that are unpublished. You can also create mock newsletters and brochures. Use the advertisements you get in the mail as a guide.

David Drake has quite a story about how he got into self-employment and of how he’s succeeding to the tune of a six figure annual income. INTERVIEWER: David, how did you get into self-employment in the first place. David: It was 2004. I had a zero bank balance, and was living with my parents… man I was flat broke! David continues: I found out you could get paid to write online content. My writing skills were poor, and to make matters worse… I’m a slow writer. But my situation was dire and I started going after writing assignments. My first assignment was for a woman, writing content for her site on wheelchairs. I have to tell you I struggled to finish the assignment. She was ecstatic with the results thought, and gave me rave reviews! INTERVIEWER: David, do you think this was just beginner’s luck? David: I don’t think so because soon I was winning assignments and raking in the cash writing online content. There are people all over the Internet looking for people to write their online content. This is a booming trend! I felt like I was figuring out how to become a writer. INTERVIEWER: Does a person have to go to school or take courses to learn how to write online content; content that people are willing to pay you for writing? David: The average person only reads at a 6th grade level. To be a good online content writer you only need to write in a basic conversational tone… like you talk. INTERVIEWER: What’s the best advice you can give to somebody interested in making a good living as an online freelance writer? David: Treat it as a business. This is not a hobby or something to play with. INTERVIEWER: What do you like best about being a internet freelance writer other than all the money you make from doing it? David: Living the retired lifestyle! Operating from anywhere in the world! All that's needed is a laptop and an Internet connection. And the best part, success in a freelance writing career means you are free to spend time as you see fit!
