Grants for Writers

Grants for writers can make your writing dreams come true.

Do you dream of writing full time, but just don't have the money to make your dream of "the writer's life" a reality? Grants for writers can help.

We have compiled a list of organizations that offer some type of assistance to writers. Please check out the ones you are interested in and follow the directions on how to apply.

  • Pen American Center - Financial emergency funds are awarded by the organization for professional writers in the form of grants or loans.

  • Brown University - is designed to provide sanctuary and support for established creative writers - fiction writers, playwrights, and poets - who are persecuted in their home countries or are actively prevented from pursuing free expression in their literary art.

  • The Haven Foundation - The Haven Foundation is a national, nonprofit organization making grants to freelance writers and artists experiencing career-threatening illness, accident, natural disaster or other emergency or personal catastrophe.

  • Bynner Foundation - Organizations may apply for grant support from $1,000 to $10,000 for a maximum of three years.

  • Funds for Writers - A very comprehensive list of links to information on grants, awards, and more.

  • Bloc - an award-winning writing competition showcasing fresh talent from across the globe.

  • The National Endowment for the Arts - Through its literature, a nation expresses its hopes and fears, and tells its stories to its citizens and to the world. The National Endowment for the Arts is committed to providing opportunities for Americans to make literature a more important part of their daily lives.

  • The Library of Virginia Literary Awards - The Library of Virginia Literary Awards are given to outstanding Virginia authors in the areas of poetry, fiction, nonfiction (and, in the case of nonfiction, also by any author about a Virginia subject), and literary lifetime achievement.

These are just a fraction of the grants for writers out there. If you know of a grant that can be added to this list please let us know!

You can become a grant writer - it's a great niche!
