You want to break into the writing field, but just don't really know if you need take a formal writing class.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if you are looking to break into the field of writing or currently write professionally, formal writing courses can help you to polish your skills and make you a better writer.

Yet with the price of education skyrocketing, you may just not have the money for campus-based courses. But don't despair, there are plenty of universities offering free writing courses online.

Yes, you heard me right, free online writing courses are offered and I am going to tell you where!

If you prefer to take a home study course, American Writers & Artists Inc. offers classes in many high paying markets for writers such as copywriting, grant writing, writing case studies, writing for the web, Writing High-Performance B2B Copy, freelance writing, travel writing, and more. The courses are not free, but you will finish with a business, not just a class.

I took the copywriting course and have been making really good money writing from my home. I learned so much and still refer to my class materials for review. I highly recommend them if your looking for a home study course that you do at your own pace, and you'd like to make a good living with your writing skills.

  • Best selling author and screenwriter Steven Barnes offers a free version of the writing class he has been teaching for many years at UCLA on his website. The course offers in-depth instruction on writing, which is why Barnes suggests completing each part of the nine-week course one week at a time. Nevertheless, the course can be downloaded all at once. No registration is required.
