Freelance Writing Tips

Freelance writing tips are important for every writer. We can all learn from each other!

You can share your freelance writing tips and your story here, and have a page on this site that you create!

See the invitation at the bottom of this page!,

As a freelance writer, one of the most important things you need to do is to stop thinking like a creative writer and start thinking as a business person.

Yes, you need creative writing ideas and freelance writing opportunities if you are going to get paid to write, but you also need to think in terms of writing as a business. These freelance writing tips will get you on your way to a career as a freelance writer who is writing for money in no time!

The first thing you need to do is:

  • Get Training

  • Just like any new career you would start, you need to be sure to get the right training. There are several high paying writing niches. Get training in the one that your most interested in.

American Writers & Artists Inc. offers many great home study courses for high paying niche writing. I took their copywriting course and started my career with confidence and still make a great living as a copywriter today.

Just like you wouldn't be a lawyer without attending law school or a doctor without going to medical school, to become a high paid writer you need to get the best training possible as well.

    • Stay Focused on Your Writing Goals

Know what your goals are and keep them in the forefront of your mind. Value your time and do only what will lead you to your goals.

(This is the most important of all the freelance writing tips.)

    • Promote Your Service
    • Promoting your writing service does not necessarily mean you have to pay a lot of money to advertise your offered service. Instead, you can use free ads listing on several websites. Sites such as craigslist is a good place to start promoting your service.

Some other great resources are to create a squiddo page, submit articles or create some freelance writing tips of your own and publish them with article city, articles base and the many other Free online article directories.

Join social networking sites. They are a great way to get the word out about your business. Some social networking sites have special sections for freelance writing jobs. You may find forums, ads listings, and even blogs that offer online writing opportunities that you can take advantage of.

You can also publish your e-books at E-Junkie or Booklocker. I use both to publish and distribute my e-book, Writing E-books for Fun and Profit. It's a great way to get your products in front of people and start making money from your work.

E-junkie Shopping Cart and Digital Delivery

Most books about writing contain real life experiences from authors who have made their living as a writer.

Reading about their experiences and taking their advice will allow you to follow in their footsteps and assist you in finding writing jobs just like them. There are so many to choose from so choose the books that focus on your goals. I love The Versatile Freelancer.

    • Visit Websites for Freelancers

Register and be an active member of websites that have sections for writers. Some of these sites include elance.com, getafreelancer.com, and hundreds of other sites that you may encounter.

    • Find Your Niche

    • Freelance writing jobs start out with you looking for something you're comfortable writing about. You may like writing for websites, and Copywriting 2.0 Your Complete Guide to Writing Web Copy that Converts will get you on your way. Or maybe you're interested in writing brochures, poetry, or detective mysteries. Whatever you enjoy writing is where you should start. Then take on new assignments as your confidence grows.

    • Check Writing Resources

there are literally hundreds and hundreds of small, regional, and trade magazines being published today. A great tool for writers is 2011 Writer's Market Deluxe Edition.

It is a great database full of information on markets that buy freelance work. Market is a general term for a magazine or newspaper. The editors at smaller magazines are often much more open to working with people that have little experience.

    • Learn Guidelines for Your Chosen Market

When you contact a market, such as a magazine, for freelance work, it is called a query. Each market will have different guidelines to accept queries. Some markets may accept queries via email whereas some will want them by regular mail. Always use the proper name of the person you are sending the query to. You can find this information on the company's website or find it in 2011 Writer's Market.

It is also important to know the market you want to write for. For example, if you want to write an article containing tips on how to get the most out of your vacation for a travel magazine, make sure that magazine hasn't published a similar article in the last year.

    • Avoid Making Excuses

If you decide to become a freelancer - ghostwriter, website designer, copywriter, write ebooks, etc. Give it all you've got. It can be difficult to start your business and many people just give up. If this is really what you want...just do it!

    • Find Your Passion

Research what your interests are and how you can find the needs of that market. When you write what others want or need and if they are willing to pay for it...well, you have found your niche.A great resource to help you is Bob Bly's book How to Write and Sell Simple Information for Fun and Profit : Your Guide to Writing and Publishing Books, E-Books, Articles, Special Reports, Audio Programs, DVDs, and Other How To Content.

This book is packed with income-generating ideas about creating a variety of saleable written works, this guide includes information for researching and writing effective, instructional materials and calling upon a variety of publishing channels, including magazines, traditional book publishers, self-publishing, and the Internet.

The mechanics behind becoming a successful writer and information packager are presented in this resource that explores how to write and sell simple information in multiple formats, allowing writers to turn specialized knowledge into money-making books and products and with these freelance writing tips, I promise you will find something that excites you!

    • Specialize

Master your market and be the go to gal or guy for that market. When you focus on one thing, you get better and people notice! AWAI's Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting is a great home study course that teaches you everything you need to know to become a master copywriter earning large fees for your writing. This is the course I took when I started my copywriting business and I am so glad I did!
